The National Archives is delighted to present a series of wine tastings, themed around some of its immense catalogue of documentation relating to wine and trade. Presented by Pippa Hayward, a wine educator and wine travel guide, each tasting will start with an introductory talk and the opportunity to see facsimiles of related historical documents, followed by a tutored tasting of six wines.

In common with Spain, South America and Australia and parts of the Roussillon, the re-purposing of abandoned old bush vines of long overlooked grapes in the hands of young winemakers has been happening in South Africa. This  altogether peaceful revolution has created “New Wave” South African wines featuring grapes like Semillon- which in 1893 amounted to 90% of South Africa’s vineyards. It was distilled for Brandy and used to create “Sherry” while Touriga Nacional made “Port”  - in the days before it became illegal to call them such.

These days Old Vine Chenin is prized, where 20 years ago it was being pulled up to plant Chardonnay and Sauvignon. Grenache now trumps Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

The “Revolution” began in earnest in 2012 with the Swartland Independents lead by Ade Badenhorst,  who had left his job as winemaker at the renowned Rustenberg winery a few years before.

Our tasting features, amongst other wines, Ade’s Papeggai Cinsault - one of the most delightfully drinkable reds to emerge from South Africa. The selection of wines will include whites and reds based on Grenache Blanc, Chenin and Rhone red grapes.

About the tutor

Ever since putting together her first wine list in 1986 the study of wine and the communicating its joys to others have been at the heart of Pippa’s working life. She also works as a Specialist Wine Advisor at The Good Wine Shop in Kew for nine years.
