Afropunk 2014 In Brooklyn New York USA

By West Africa Cooks, 21 April, 2014

AFROPUNK is in Commodore Barry Park, Brooklyn, New York August for another weekend of live music, vibrant art and good vibes.

There is expressive fashion at Afropunk 2014, there are food trucks at Afropunk 2014 (yelp reviews) and there is a stage for music at Afropunk 2014. What music? Well punk meets rap meets afro experimental funk alternate. Also think Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Little Richard, Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Jimi Hendrix. It's like joining the dots. A different culture an influential community of young, gifted people of all backgrounds who speak through music, art, film, comedy, fashion and more.

The Afrocentric Experience

What is it? DIY aesthetics, radical thought and social non-conformity. It is about race identity, exile, loneliness, community, inter-racial dating and black power. It's about following a punk rock lifestyle. Living the dual life of a person of color in a mostly white community. The Afrocentric Experience is dedicated to the empowerment and the enlightenment processes of all people through out the world especially those of African descent in Africa and the African diaspora.

Did you know the Afropunk Music Festival was founded in 2002-3 and has grown ever since. Matthew Morgan who runs the show with his partner Jocelyn Cooper grew up in Edmonton, North London; frustrated with the negative attitudes to black businesses, lack of diversity in the board rooms and lack of enthusiasm for his start-up took his idea to America. It is now sixty thousands two days, one of the largest festivals on the East Coast of America. All starts with battle of the bands in June. Who can get there band on the festival rostrum, the crowd votes.

How does Afropunk work? Well the promoter Jocelyn Cooper (JC) is hard at work talking to advertisers 24-7, getting the corporates on board so the event is free. It is JC's passion to keep it that way. Brands like Doctor Martens advert. The company sells merchandise DVD's and T-shirts. JC is also hard at work putting into action the afro punk food truck festival. See foodtrucksin.

What the Press Say

Described by the New York Times as β€œthe most multicultural festival in the US,” the word AFROPUNK itself has become synonymous with open-minded, non-conforming and unconventional, placing the institution at the epicenter of urban culture inspired by alternative music. Adamant in promoting diversity, the festival stage is always studded with music’s most distinct acts.

So you're in New York! Well head over to the free event AFROPUNK 2014. Sweat, mosh, and shout. Feel the music, free your mind, join the movement.
