In addition to our South African Wine Tasting this Saturday, June 3rd we will have a rare DC appearance from one of the best importers in the USA. Fran Kysela was honored a few years ago as “Importer of the Year” by Wine and Spirits magazine. And here is a quick “review” from Robert Parker himself:

Fran Kysela, unlike most Americans, was born into a family that consumed and appreciated fine wine. One of the youngest specialty importers, Kysela began his career as the national sales manager for the import arm of Kermit Lynch's sprawling wine business. Subsequently, he worked briefly for another high quality importer, Weygandt-Metzler in Unionville, Pennsylvania. Inevitably, Kysela founded his own firm, dedicated to discovering high quality top estates in France and Italy [and Portugal].

Kysela's offerings all tend to be extremely pure, ripe, fruity wines...in short, faithful reflections of their appellations. He is not an aggressive interventionalistic importer à la Robert Kacher (or to a lesser extent, Neal Rosenthal, Eric Salomon, or Peter Weygandt), but neither does he permit his producers to take a laissez-faire approach to their work. In a few short years Kysela has emerged as one of the finest palates and selectors of top wine, whether it be an inexpensive Muscadet or a top of the line Burgundy.

Fran will show the following wines from his portfolio:

Sku: 71618 | $12.99
2016 Otella Lugana DOC
Intense straw yellow color with green tinges. Exotic notes, candied fruit and citrus, warm and very deep on the nose. Widespread expressive finesse; to the palate the texture is rich and persistent.

Sku: 71791 | $17.99
2015 Dr. Leimbrock Brauneberger Juffer Spatlese
A late harvest Riesling with fruity sweetness and great aging potential, aromatic bouquet of honey, melon, ripe fruits. Grapes come from Brauneberger Juffer and Juffer-Sonnenuhr - one of the most prestigious vineyards in the Mosel winegrowing region. The vineyard faces south and provides the best conditions for growing Riesling.

Sku: 71072 | $14.99
2016 Chateau de Segries Tavel Rose
Beautiful ripe cherry and red berry aromas with floral scents. Good concentration on the palate, flavorful and perfectly balanced. Good acidity and mineral backbone make it a great match with Provençal or Asian cuisine, grilled meat, fresh fruit salads.

Sku: 71792 | $21.99
2015 Domaine de la Colline St. Jean Vacqueyras V.V.
The old vine cuvee is the 2015 Vacqueyras Vieilles Vignes (80% Grenache and 20% Syrah), and it tastes similar to the classic cuvee, yet has more concentration and length. Toasted spices, black raspberries, crushed violets and licorice give way to a full-bodied, concentrated, ripe 2015 that has sweet tannin and loads of charm. It’s a big, blockbuster-styled beauty to buy by the case.

Sku: 72110 | $29.99
2015 Maurice Ecard Savigny les Beaune Narbantons
One of our fist 2015 red Burgundy arrivals. Come get a preview of just how good this vintage is!
