The Institute of Brewing and Distilling presents an evening of conversation with Charlie Bamforth and Cosmo Sutherland, hosted by Ian Jones.


Join us for an exciting discussion on the beer industry with three leading figures in brewing research, business and production. Covering topics from raw materials and production techniques to emerging trends and consumption habits, the evening promises to be an unmissable insight into current industry practices and thinking.


Charlie, Cosmo and Ian will kick-off their discussion at 7.30pm - please arrive by 7pm to secure a seat. Taking the form of an informal question and answer session, you will have the opportunity to pick their brains on (almost) anything you can think of. So, start thinking of questions! After the event there will be opportunity to meet the panellists and fellow attendees downstairs in the well-stocked Dean Swift bar.





Charlie Bamforth the "Pope of Foam" is Anheuser-Busch Endowed Professor of Malting and Brewing Sciences at University of California, Davis. Author of countless influential research papers and textbooks on a broad range of brewing topics, Charlie is a hugely successful and popular educator, instrumental in the foundation of many of America’s most successful breweries. He is immediate past-president of the IBD.


Ian Jones worked as a technical brewer and manager at Whitbread, Guinness and South African Breweries before becoming group training and development manager for SAB. In 2002 he founded the brewing training consultancy Global Beverage Solutions. An MSc and MBA holder, Ian is currently Operations Director for Charles Wells, where he also manages the innovative collaboration project the Wandering Brewer.  


Cosmo Sutherland is a Heriot Watt MSc graduate and Lead Brewer at Beavertown Brewery. Started in 2011 beneath East End BBQ restaurant Duke’s Brew & Que, Beavertown is one of the UK’s most acclaimed breweries, and its beers and trophy cabinet are the envy of the industry. Cosmo joined Beavertown in 2014.
