Zachys New York Annual South African Braai and Tasting!
Zachys Annual Braai is Back! For those who may not know, the earliest archaeological evidence places the first barbecue in a cave in South Africa over 400,000 years ago, and the word Braai means to barbeque or grill in Afrikaans. Those who attended Zachys first Braai in 2017, may be asking yourselves “how could Zachys top that!?” Easy, this year we’ve invited the producers and owners from eight benchmark South African estates to join our 2nd Annual Braai! From winemakers to owners and estate directors, we have some of the region’s top personalities flying over 7,800 miles from South Africa to Scarsdale to share their wisdom, passion and talents with our guests Friday, May 11th from 3pm to 7pm.Featured Producers:

There is no doubt that South African wines have been experiencing a recent renaissance. This is an exciting time for South African winemaking, with the next generation taking over at many historic estates, new rising stars, and Old World winemakers heading south to discover the diverse terroirs and microclimates. Jack Suckling of JamesSuckling.com wrote, “it’s more than evident South Africa is rediscovering its identity as a serious producer of quality wines.” We could not agree more. We are proud to feature 25+ selections from some of South African benchmark estates, rising stars like Tania Careme who brings her knowledge of the noble chenin blanc from the Loire, to one of “the most exciting and forward-thinking winemaker in Stellenbosch at the moment” – Bruwer Raats of Raats Family Wine, and much more.Discover the outstanding wines from Stellenbosch to Swartland to Cape Town, and meet the dynamic personalities behind the wines and estates. Whether you are looking for light and elegant whites that will give your favorite Sauvignon Blanc a run for its money, Chardonnays that drink more like Russian River, medium-bodied reds that will make you forget the word Merlot, or full-bodied reds that rival the finest cult classics from California and Grand Cru Classe Bordeaux, there is something for everyone at all price points. In addition, we are excited to present Morgenster Estate Bordeaux-inspired wines to Zachys. Morgenster produces Bordeaux Blend red and whites with the first growth touch, as the famed Pierre Lurton (managing director of Châteaux Cheval Blanc and d’Yquem) is the consulting winemaker for this critically acclaimed estate. These are Bordeaux-blend reds and white that will entice even the ardent Bordeaux enthusiast. Don’t miss this incredible line-up of wines! We wouldn’t dare serve you a hot dog with this incredible line-up of wines. Join us to taste 25+ South African wine selections paired with traditional fare from the land that invented barbeque, along with a few modern American classics that are perfect for any budget. While Zachys Braai may be a little unconventional, one underlying trait remains — the camaraderie of sipping wine around an open flame and enjoying great food with friends and family. We say let the tradition continue and join us here in Scarsdale on Friday, May 11th from 3 to 7 pm at Zachys.
