The first gathering of people of colour in the food and beverage industry - cooks/chefs, sommeliers, stylists, activists, entrepreneurs, producers, media and allies: SA POC at the Table.
The aim is to provide a collaborative platform for young experts and leaders in their fields to hold a series of uplifting talks and open discussions and demonstrations on food/beverage media, representation, indigenous food's place in restaurants, identity and mentorship with the aim of growing it into a national event.
In a country with 90% people of colour, only a small percentage work in top positions in the broader food industry and our focus is on those addressing this and looking at alternative models of success. The line-up includes veteran African food expert and writer Dorah Sithole, Mogau Seshoene of the groundbreaking Lazy Makoti cookbook (third reprint in its second month of release), MasterCook Zambia creator Abigail Mbuzi, Katlego Mlambo (ex-Test Kitchen, Pot Luck Club), chef/entrepreneur Abigail Mbalo (4Roomed eKasi Culture), Karen Dudley - restauranteur, chef and author, food activist Zayaan Khan of Apocalypse Kitchen and many other beloved personalities.
The event is open to POC professionals and artists in the food and beverage industry, to POC allies and to media - food glossies, trade media and newspapers.
